FILM-lovers and fans of vintage American pop culture are in for a treat this autumn.

A retro-style drive-in cinema is coming to Brighton Marina from October 1, with a line-up of classics, family favourites and critically acclaimed flicks.

At The DriveIn will include screenings of Grease, Back To The Future, Joker and 2018’s A Star Is Born, as well as children’s Disney favourites Toy Story and The Lion King.

Films will be played on an LED screen and passengers can pull up and tune in through their car radios.

Organisers say social distancing measures will be in place and they hope the event will provide an escape for people missing outdoor entertainment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Each film screening will be preceded by other entertainment including bingo, a silent car disco and stand-up comedy.

Guests will even be able to order American-inspired food through an app, which will be delivered to vehicles in boxes by waiters on roller skates.

Organiser Alan Crofton said: “We are incredibly excited to announce tickets are now on sale for our modern day version of the classic drive-in.

The Argus:

“Ahead of the film screenings, from Grease to Joker to Toy Story, we will be providing a myriad of entertainment from comedy to silent car discos.

“Our aim is for At the Drive-In to be an experience that brings real joy and the perfect antidote to a post-lockdown world and we promise to deliver it within a safe yet fun environment.

“See you at the drive-in.”

The drive-in will run for four days from Thursday, October 1 until Sunday, October 4, with matinee screenings as well as evening ones over the weekend.

Tickets are £35 per car and ten free tickets per screening will be available for NHS staff and care workers, as a thank you for their hard work and dedication during the coronavirus crisis.

It comes after cinema chains Odeon and Cineworld said they are preparing to reopen venues in July, so long as lockdown measures continue to be eased.

Both companies will reopen cinemas with social distancing measures in place and limited numbers of people allowed per screening.
