We are glad the Argus is supporting the measures taken by the council to limit the use of cars in the city in order to maintain the cleaner air achieved during the lockdown and to promote physical and mental health by allowing space for cycling, walking and relaxation outside.
Using a car is not a matter of life and death whereas breathing clean air often is.
The need to tackle the crisis of climate change is also a matter of life and death or even of our existence. To be a carbon free city by 2030 we have no option but to reduce traffic.
This is also necessary if we want to save our NHS.
We fully support the council's decision to close Madeira drive to cars and to create cycle paths wherever possible.
We are confident that people can and must adapt to new ways of travelling.
