The longest road in Brighton is Lewes Road. As a youngster in the 1950's, I lived on this great road!

I expect you are thinking "What's great about Lewes Road?" So I will try to describe it.

Firstly our former parish church St Peters is at the start. Brighton's largest church St Martins is a bit further along the road.

We had two cinemas. I can't remember the name of one of them, but is was known locally as "The Flea Pit". It went there once with my mother. It was on her 25th birthday, on 30th August 1955. The film was "The Sign of the Pagan". To me it was awful!

The other cinema was "The Gaiety". I saw Cliff Richard in "Summer Holiday" there in 1963!

Lewes Road borders the "level" on one side and on the other side they are some nice villas. There was also pubs and we even had a pill factory named "Coxes".

The clock at the top of the building can now be seen at Sainsbury's.

There is great history there too with Preston Barracks. It was built to defend us against Napoleon.

There was the offices and garage of Brighton Corporation Transport. It housed firstly trams, then trolley and motor buses. There was a very nice floor in the offices which featured Brighton emblems, two dolphins!

We have the fantastic Wild Park followed by Stanmer Village and House. Today Lewes Road is just as interesting for it is home to our two universities, "Brighton" & "Sussex".

There is much to see there!!
