A MAN has died at the scene of a car crash on a main road.

The 21-year-old driver from Sidcup crashed in a Vauxhall Corsa in Wilson Avenue, Brighton.

Police say they were called after the vehicle hit a lamppost at 6am this morning.

Meanwhile one of three passengers in the car, a woman in her 20s, has suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

The Argus:

Emergency services including the fire brigade were at the scene of the incident and a cordon has been set up.

Police closed the road in both directions close to East Brighton Park, but it has since reopened.

In a statement the police said: "We are investigating a fatal road traffic collision in Brighton and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"Officers, ambulance and fire crews were called to Wilson Avenue at 6am on Wednesday (17 June) to reports of a black Vauxhall Corsa hitting a lamppost and a parked vehicle.

"Sadly, the driver of the car - a 21-year-old man from Sidcup - was confirmed dead at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed.

"One of three passengers in the vehicle - a woman in her 20s - was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The road was closed while enquiries are underway and the Coroner's Officer has been notified."

Brighton and Hove Buses says services were diverted, including for passengers using the 21 service that links Brighton Marina with the Goldstone Valley in Hove.

Police say anyone who witnessed the crash should contact Sussex Police online or call 101 and quote Operation Hawkswood.
