I WAS saddened to see that the Weald School has decided to avoid naming one of its buildings after JK Rowling because of the current furore over her views on transgender issues.

It is understandable if the school wishes to distance itself from what has become a very toxic situation, with some in the trans community aiming abuse and death threats at the author. However, I would question the school’s deputy head when she claims Ms Rowling would be an inappropriate role model.

In Rowling’s blog post, quoted in your article, she says: “I stand alongside the brave women and men, gay, straight and trans, who’re standing up for freedom of speech and thought, and for the rights and safety of some of the most vulnerable in our society.”

In conclusion, she writes: “All I’m asking is for... empathy, … understanding, to be extended to the many millions of women whose sole crime is wanting their concerns to be heard without receiving threats and abuse.” Are these the words of an inappropriate role model?
