MY HUSBAND Geoffrey and I were fortunate to have met Dame Vera on a number of occasions especially during our mayoral years.
Dame Vera was a great supporter of charities and events in Brighton and Hove and we particularly remember being with her and her husband Harry at an event at the Sealife Centre and also at the Variety Club Dinner in the 1980s.
On one occasion more recently my mother who is now 96 had a lovely conversation with Dame Vera at the Theatre Royal lounge bar sitting together in two armchairs.
Dame Vera had a heart of gold, always very down to earth and would talk to everyone.
Dame Vera was a national icon and will always be remembered by so many with enormous affection.
