THOUSANDS of visitors and residents flocked to the seafront to cool off in the mini heatwave yesterday.

The beaches from Brighton to Hove were packed as temperatures soared over 30C, making it the hottest day of the year so far.

At Brighton Railway Station scores of passengers got off trains and streamed through the concourse.

They walked down Queen’s Road and went straight to the beach. It was a similar scene at beaches across Sussex with sunbathers, paddle boarders and swimmers enjoying the sea.

It comes as lockdown restrictions were eased by Boris Johnson this week.

The Prime Minister announced the two metre rule would be scrapped for a “one metre plus” alternative and the likes of hairdressers, pubs, museums and more would be able to reopen from July 4. Groups of friends could already meet outside and are still being advised to keep two metres apart where possible to stop the spread of coronavirus.

But Government advice still urges people to stay two metres away from others who are not from their household.

People are also still being asked to avoid public transport whenever possible.

Government advice states: “People can spend as much time as they wish outside, with people from their own household or support bubble or in a gathering of up to six people outside.”

But as lockdown measures ease, many have taken the chance to enjoy the sunshine, while businesses relying on tourism enjoyed a bumper day of trade.

Marrocco’s on Hove seafront was among those doing their best to meet demand.

The restaurant and ice cream parlour said it was very busy yesterday, but has been adapting to the situation over the past few weeks.

A spokesman for the restaurant said: “When the sun comes out it is wonderful.

“It makes everybody happy, as long as they are staying safe and being sensible.

“This has been a difficult time, and the hardest factor is still making sure our customers and staff are safe.”

Today was predicted to be hot again, though temperatures will ease tomorrow and it could rain on Saturday.
