A NEW boxing academy aims to create a new generation of prizefighters.

Management firm MTK Global and the Academy of Sports and Education have teamed up to create a National Boxing and Education Academy in Brighton.

From September, the academy will train 16 to 19-year-olds at Brighton and Hove Boxing Team in Kings Esplanade, Hove.

The programme combines boxing training and education, giving talented teens the chance to earn a professional boxing contract and gain sporting qualifications.

Former pro Scott “The Brighton Rock” Welch and ex-Albion player Jamie Strong are the minds behind the academy.

“We’re aiming to produce professional boxers whilst also helping students develop a career through sport,” said Mr Strong.

"“The programme helps to get kids off the streets and into combat sport where they can gain a valuable education.

“The academy also offers MTK Global work experience and a number of sporting career pathways.”
