A DECISION is due on the controversial scheme to build a road through the Camrose ground - and a compulsory purchase order could be issued for part of the pitch.

Hampshire County Council's deputy leader Cllr Rob Humby, who has responsibility for transport in the county, will scrutinise the plan on Thursday (July 2), which could pave the way for the demolishing of the football ground.

He will also decide whether the project appraisal for the £3.5 million scheme can go ahead.

However, both Sports England and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council have objected to the Camrose link road, which will see a new traffic light junction built on Winchester Road, and will connect with Western Way and Buckland Avenue with a remodelled mini roundabout.

Cllr Humby's decision will be subject to the outcome of a planning applications on the site.

He said: “The Camrose Link Road forms a key component of the proposed £20 million Brighton Hill improvements which provides an alternative route between Western Way and the A30, enabling the Western Way entry to Brighton Hill Roundabout to be closed.

"This lends significant capacity benefits for the operation of Brighton Hill Roundabout and addresses an existing road safety issue on this entry arm.

"The Link Road will also provide an access route for the proposed redevelopment of the Camrose site, for which separate planning applications have been submitted by the football ground owner.

“Good infrastructure is vital to Hampshire’s economic prosperity, and ever more important as we deal with the economic impact of Coronavirus. These improvements on the A30 have been designed to support those aims and to make day to day travel easier for local residents and commuters.”

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council own around 30 per cent of the Camrose site, and will hand that land over to HCC for free to implement the link road, whilst Basron, who own the rest, have included it in their plans for a housing development and care home.

The road is part of redevelopment plans to the notorious Brighton Hill roundabout. The link road would allow the Western Way southbound exit onto the roundabout, which many consider to be dangerous, to be closed.

The scheme has been criticised by supporters of the football club, whilst councillors from South Ham and Brighton Hill have also hit out at the latest plans, including the removal of the subways under the roundabout.

Should Cllr Humby give the go-ahead on Thursday, a compulsory purchase order will be issued for the part of the proposed link road on Basron land, which includes a small part of the Camrose pitch and stands.
