MORE trade unions have backed calls for council care workers to receive bonuses for working bank holidays.
Brighton and Hove City Council said it would meet Brighton and Hove Unison to address its concerns after it accused the city council of discrimination in May.
It said paying bank holiday bonuses to “overwhelmingly male” Cityclean workers but not care workers, most of them female, was unfair.
Now union alliance Brighton, Hove and District Trades Council has added its voice for calls to pay more bonuses to care staff.
In an email to city council chief executive Geoff Raw, general secretary Matt Webb said the current arrangement was “against the spirit of equality and fairness”. “We would strongly urge for this to be dealt with promptly and not kicked further into the long grass,” he said.
A city council spokesman said in May it “celebrated the contribution of care staff” and “ensuring the principles of equality for all staff was a core principle of its employment practices”.
