A SHOPPING street car ban will keep pedestrians safe, says a council transport chief.

Brighton and Hove City Council will ban vehicles from parts of The Lanes from tomorrow for up to 18 months, with some exemptions.

Weekend car bans in Sydney Street and Gardner Street in North Laine will also be extended to weekdays.

Council transport chief Councillor Anne Pissaridou said the changes will provide more space for pedestrians in these areas.

“Removing traffic will allow road reallocation to provide wider footways to ensure pedestrians are safe.

“Local businesses were informed through the Business Improvement District and they will have six months to comment on the changes if they wish.”

“These works all come from the urgent response action plan approved by the transport committee on June 23.”
