TWO men were arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink at the scene of a city centre crash
Yesterday, a passerby had a narrow escape when a car careered on to the pavement and smashed into a phone box.
The man was walking in Grand Parade, Brighton, when the out-of-control black car crashed close by him at about 12.30am.
Sussex Police said that two men, aged 25 and 30, were both arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink.
They have both been released under investigation while enquiries continue.
The wreckage and shattered glass were strewn across the ground afterwards.
The car ended up positioned diagonally across the pavement, just inches from buildings, its headlights still on.
The crash happened near the Easy Hours convenience shop. Police were quickly at the scene.
A passerby said: “He was driving and lost control, it all happened very quickly.
“He went through a phone box and I got out of the way just in time as I was giving a homeless man a sandwich.
“It was chaos afterwards. I just wanted to go home.”
Asked how close the car came to hitting him, he said: “Let’s just say closer than I’d have liked.”
