TASTY Greek treats can be ordered to your doorstep after an entrepreneurial chef saw a chance to expand his business.

Tim Vasilakis runs The Athenian, which started as a street food stall but has now launched a Deliveroo Editions kitchen service in Brighton.

The 36-year-old wants diners to be able to enjoy the authentic taste of Greece here in the city.

He is originally from the Greek capital and has built his business in the UK over the past two years.

Tim said: “Brighton has been on the radar for at least two years.

“We’ve been getting requests from people on Instagram to open something there.

“Brighton has a mature food

scene and people are open to new cuisines.”

The cuisine he has to offer includes souvlaki or gyros, made with a choice of meats, vegan gyros, halloumi fries, and loukoumades, a type of doughnut in honey or chocolate sauce.

Since launching in Brighton Tim said: “It’s been amazing, really overwhelming.

“People have been wanting to get their hands on our food for a while, so we’re happy to finally be able to cater for them.

“I started The Athenian at the end of 2014, as a small street food stall in a North London Market. At the time souvlaki and gyros where words relatively unknown in the UK culinary vocabulary.

“In London we have sites in various locations including Shoreditch, Victoria, Canary Wharf, Wembley, Hackney, White City, Battersea and Tooting.

“The way I look at The Athenian is as a movement for change.

“To challenge old stereotypes of Greece and its cuisine and introduce dishes that in the UK were unknown, while having a simple and minimalist approach in everything we do.

“Our approach at The Athenian is to have a simple, fresh menu, which features mouth-watering souvlaki and gyros.

“We also have modern twists on specialities such as feta and courgette fritters and halloumi fries.

“Our souvlaki is the perfect combination of soft, handmade pitta wrapped around lightly chargrilled meat or cheese which has been marinated in olive oil, lemon and Greek herbs, all served with an array of salads and sauces.”

Tim said precautions over coronavirus have been a priority and staff have their temperatures checked before they can start work in the kitchen.

Recently he had a half-price offer for NHS staff as a gesture of appreciation for the hard work done by those on the frontline of the pandemic.

He added: “As a street food concept, The Athenian offers speedy takeaway lunches, and is available for delivery via Deliveroo for anyone needing lunch to come to them.

“Working closely with Deliveroo will allow The Athenian to feed those still in isolation, encouraging social distancing and keeping staff in work, maintaining company morale.”
