COUNCIL housing repair workers will strike for three days, demanding an eight per cent pay rise.

GMB union members in Brighton and Hove City Council's housing maintenance team will down tools on August 3, 5, and 7 unless they are granted the pay increase.

The union had previously threatened strike action against Mears, which ran council housing maintenance for the city council until its contract expired in April.

Brighton GMB branch secretary Mark Turner said he hoped the planned strike would "jolt" the city council into negotiating with staff.

"We are sorry for what will potentially be quite a disruptive period for the city residents’ housing repair service," he said.

"But to be clear the GMB is not prepared to accept any cuts at all.

"You only get so far being as tolerant as we have been to date.

"Let’s hope the onset of strike action is just the jolt the council needs to wake up and start negotiations. It’s their move next."

The union said it had sent strike notices to city council chief executive Geoff Raw and interim housing director Rachel Sharpe.
