A FIRE broke out at a residential block of flats.

Two crews were sent to Bognor High Street to tackle the flames on Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses saw the fire engines blocking the road near Regis Court and Princess House, opposite the Job Centre.

The area was cordoned off while firefighters moved into a property.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue had told residents nearby to keep windows and doors closed.

Crews from Chichester and Bognor doused the flames.

Later on Tuesday afternoon the service said: “A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called to reports of a fire in a domestic property on High Street, Bognor Regis today at 12.59pm.

“Two crews from Bognor Fire Station were mobilised to the scene along with a further appliance from Chichester Fire Station.

“Upon arrival crews were faced with a fire in a bedroom on the third floor of the property. All persons were accounted for, and crews used six sets of breathing apparatus to enter the building and three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

“The last crew left the scene at 2.35pm.

“Thank you to everyone for your patience while we responded to this incident.”
