A HORSE was killed and a driver taken to hospital with potentially life-changing injuries after a serious crash.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a two-vehicle collision involving a white Tipper truck and a black Volvo XC90 which was towing a trailer carrying a horse.

Officers were called to Durleighmarsh around midday yesterday, where the accident took place on the A272 between Rogate and Petersfield. The Tipper truck had been travelling east towards Midhurst, while the Volvo had been heading west.

A 51-year-old man who was driving the truck was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with potentially life-changing injuries, while the two women in the Volvo suffered minor injuries. The horse in the trailer died at the scene.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the crash or either vehicle being driven beforehand. Officers are especially keen to hear from the occupants of a Volkswagen car who may have seen what happened but left the scene before any details could be taken.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to call 101 quoting Operation Mulberry.
