FIRE crews are attending a blaze at a flat.

Three teams from Worthing were sent to the fire in Stoke Abbott Road shortly before noon.

Police have joined them at the scene as the firefighters continue to battle the blaze.

A witness said the flat was filled with smoke at the height of the fire.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a fire in a flat off Stoke Abbot Road in Worthing at 11.49am this morning.

"Three fire engines from Worthing have been mobilised to the scene and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using one high pressure hose reel and one covering jet.

"Residents living nearby are urged to keep their doors and windows closed for the time being."

At 12.46pm, the service provided an update.

The spokesman said: "Steady progress is being made.

"Crews remain at the scene turning over and damping down."

A further update was provided at 3pm.

The spokesman said: "All residents were accounted for and had self-evacuated from the property prior to our attendance at the incident.

“One crew from Worthing Fire Station remains at the scene, and officers are liaising with the Red Cross to support residents impacted by the fire.

“Firefighters would like to urge all residents to remain vigilant when lighting candles.
