A DRIVE-IN cinema is launching in a railway station car park.

From next week, the car park at Brighton Station will play host to a pop-up Odeon showing films from The Goonies to The Lego Movie 2.

Visitors will find the place transformed. Pictures will be screened on a giant backlit LED display and sound will be piped into moviegoers’ cars through their stereo or a bluetooth speaker.

Govia Thameslink Railway said screenings have been scheduled at times when the station is normally mostly empty. It said there will be a maximum of 125 cars per screening to allow for social distancing.

A week-long pilot scheme will launch on Monday with a series of evening screenings of the award-winning Joker.

Over the weekend, there will be four shows a day including cult classic The Goonies and family films including Shazam! and The Lego Movie 2.

If the trial run proves successful, the idea could be rolled out to more stations across the Govia Thameslink Railway network.

The Argus:

Angie Doll, a spokeswoman for the company, said it was an exciting partnership that would keep families together in their cars and give film fans “a truly special experience” as the country comes out of lockdown.

She said: “Even in normal times, station commuter car parks are quiet in the evenings and at the weekend and we’ve worked carefully with Odeon to curate a worthy cinema experience for any film fan keen to try out a whole new cinematic experience.”

Sian Jenkins of Odeon said: “We are delighted to join forces with the team at Govia Thameslink Railway and Southern to bring a drive-in experience to a location that many are familiar with as part of their usual commute.

“We can’t wait to welcome our first guests and immerse them into the world of film at such special locations.”

Drive-in cinemas have become increasingly popular as lockdown restrictions ease.

A retro-style one is coming to Brighton Marina on October 1, there is a pop-up cinema in Chiddingly next weekend and the Big Sky Cinema Drive-In opens for five days in Seaford from July 30.

Tickets for the Brighton Station cinema are on sale via Eventbrite at £35 for a car of up to seven.
