A ROCK star’s spectacular seafront home under construction is beginning to take shape.

David Gilmour’s extravagant building project next door to Marrocco’s in King’s Esplanade in Hove has made significant progress.

Some scaffolding has been removed, revealing the roof of the elegant new Medina House, which has been designed to echo the original building on the site – a 19th century Turkish bathhouse.

The Pink Floyd guitarist and his wife, the novelist Polly Samson, bought the Victorian building five years ago but had to have it demolished in 2018 after it was found to be beyond repair.

  • How the Gilmours' house will look once complete

The original Medina House, which dates from 1894, was a distinctive three-storey building which formerly housed a laundry and women’s slipper baths.

It formed part of the larger Medina Baths complex, which stretched to the western corner of Sussex Road and also contained two swimming pools and men’s slipper baths.

The 74-year-old musician agreed to replace the historic building with a design that would reflect the original spirit of the bathhouse.

The Argus:

One passer-by admiring the building said: “I think it will make a wonderful addition to the seafront.

“It’s great that he has been sensitive to the history of the building in the design.

“I expect it will be a stunning piece of architecture when it’s finished.”

Once complete, the couple’s new luxury home will have five bedrooms, three with en-suite bathrooms, as well as a study, library, a gym and a courtyard garden.

The house is expected to be one of the most impressive properties in the city – and one of the most valuable.

Earlier this month David Gilmour released Yes, I Have Ghosts – his first single in five years.

The track features his 18-year-old daughter Romany singing and playing the harp and was inspired by his wife Polly’s new novel, A Theatre for Dreamers.

Talking about the single, David said: “I was working on this song just as we went in to lockdown and had to cancel a session with backing singers but, as it turned out, the solution was right here.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way Romany’s voice blends with mine and her beautiful harp playing has been another revelation”.

Polly, who wrote the lyrics for the song, said: “Collaborating with David – as I have done many times over the last 30 years, writing songs for both Pink Floyd and his solo albums – we were able to bring together the worlds of literature and music to enhance the listening experience and connect with audiences in a way which I don’t think has been done before.”
