FROM Harry Potter to Monty Python, some of the biggest films ever made were shot here in Sussex.

With the rolling hills of the South Downs and picturesque coastline that caresses our county, there are former film sets all over Sussex.

Some of the biggest films ever shot in the county include:

1. Atonement, 2007

Thirteen-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit.

Director: Joe Wright

Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Brenda Blethyn

Sussex location: Seaford

The beach featured on Robbie’s postcard and seen at the film’s conclusion, is Cuckmere Haven, at the mouth of the River Cuckmere between Seaford and Eastbourne, on the East Sussex coast.

2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 2005

Harry Potter finds himself competing in a hazardous tournament between rival schools of magic, but he is distracted by recurring nightmares.

Director: Mike Newell

Starring:  Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint

Sussex location: Seven Sisters Country Park

The Seven Sisters cliffs were used for spectacular shots where Harry Potter walks up the hill to find the boots that transport him to the Quidditch World Cup.

3. The Inbetweeners Movie, 2011

The Argus:

Four socially troubled 18-year-olds from the south of England go on holiday to Malia.

Director: Ben Palmer

Sussex location: Crawley

As comedy quadruplets, Will, Simon, Jay and Neil jet off to Malia, Gatwick Airport is featured heavily at the start of the movie.

4. The Monuments Men, 2014

An unlikely World War II platoon is tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners.

Director: George Clooney

Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray

Sussex location: Rye, East Sussex

As the Monuments Men made their way onto the Normany beach to join the allied soldiers, this was actually shot at Camber Sands in Rye.

5. Yellowbeard, 1983

After serving two decades in prison, Yellowbeard (Graham Chapman) breaks out determined to recover the treasure that he buried so long ago, alongside his son, old crew, and the British Navy.

Director: Mel Damski

Starring:  Graham Chapman, Peter Boyle, Cheech Marin

Sussex location: Rye, East Sussex

The historic public house, The Mermaid Inn, which was rebuilt in 1420 was featured in the box-office hit Yellowbeard. The Monty Python film also featured the neighbouring church square and infamous cobbled Mermaid Street leading to the inn. The film turned out to be Marty Feldman's last ever project, after he died in Mexico during production.

6. Never Let Me Go, 2010

The lives of three friends, from their early school days into young adulthood, when the reality of the world they live in comes knocking.

Director: Mark Romanek

Director: Bill Condon

Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada

Sussex location: Winchelsea and Seaford Head.

Once set in 1947 Holmes retires to a cottage near the sea, tending bees. This is supposedly ‘Cuckmere Haven’ but is actually Wickham Manor Farm, a National Trust bed and breakfast in Winchelsea near Rye.

Later in the film, Mr Holmes and the housekeeper’s son go for a walk along Seaford Head with the dramatic white cliffs of the Seven Sisters in the background.

8. The Living Daylights, 1987

James Bond is sent to investigate a KGB policy to kill all enemy spies and uncovers an arms deal that potentially has major global ramifications.

Director: John Glen

The iconic scene of the Land Rover falling into the water was set in Gibraltar but actually filmed in Beachy Head near Eastbourne, because apparently it was more convenient to film this in England.
