A PERSON has died after being hit by a train on the railway in Sussex.

Southern Rail says the incident has happened between Barnham in Sussex and Havant in Hampshire.

The incident is causing delays for passengers and rail lines between Portsmouth and Littlehampton are closed.

Images from the scene this morning show police and ambulance crews near a level crossing.

Customers are being asked to board the number 700 bus service run by Stagecoach.

It is understood the West Sussex Coroner’s office has been informed.

The Argus:

Southern Rail said: "It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Havant and Barnham.

"No trains can move between Barnham and Havant. Trains in the area are being held at stations and won't move forward until the emergency services deem it safe to do so.

The Argus:

"Replacement buses are being organised, we will provide an update when these are confirmed."

Meanwhile there were also delays for passengers in Hastings and St Leonards because of a fire between the two stations near the railway line.

All train services on that stretch had been cancelled, but services are now returning to normal.

Southern Rail said: "Train services running through Hastings and St Leonards Warrior Square are returning to normal but some services may still be subject to cancellation."
