POLICE have blasted senseless vandals who damaged a war memorial.

The leg of the Silent Soldier First World War monument in Hassocks has been broken off.

Mid Sussex prevention inspector Darren Taylor slammed the “disgusting” act, saying the monument would cost about £250 to repair.

He said that “someone must know something” and urged anyone with information on the incident, which is believed to have happened this week, to contact police quoting reference 0470 22/07.

Inspector Taylor said he had been notified of the vandalism by Hassocks Parish Council, and shared the information on social media.

Several people quickly responded saying they would be keen to contribute to the repair costs.

Inspector Taylor said: "Wow. We have had so many kind-hearted and generous people contact us by Twitter and email offering donations for the damaged Silent Soldier in Hassocks.

"I have emailed the parish clerk this morning and asked if they would be open to accepting donations for the repairs."
