ARMED police arrested a man on suspicion of possessing a gun this evening.

Officers attended a property in Cromwell Road, Hove, at about 7.30pm.

One resident in the street said he heard shouting and saw a man being put in an ambulance.

The witness, who did not wish to be named, said: "I was just about to have dinner when I heard someone shouting.

"I saw about ten riot police with guns going into a flat.

"They pulled out one bloke whose wrists looked like they were bleeding and put him in an ambulance.

"More police turned up and there were loads of cars.

"The man was in the ambulance for ages while they raided the property and then he was taken out and put in a police car and driven away.

"I've never seen so many police officers with guns in Brighton and Hove."

Cromwell Road was blocked off while police attended to the incident and pedestrians coming down the road from The Drive were told to walk around another way.

Eaton Villas was also blocked off, but officers have now left the scene and both roads are open again.

Sussex Police said: "A man has been arrested following an incident in Cromwell Road, Hove, this evening.

"Armed and unarmed officers attended the scene and the suspect was safely detained and arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the wider community.

"No injuries have been reported, however the ambulance service have attended as a precaution, and a section of the road has been closed to ensure everyone’s safety.
