POLICE have urged people not to attend an unofficial Pride party planned for this weekend.

There are unconfirmed reports that partygoers are set to make a beeline for Brighton tomorrow - ahead of what would have been Pride weekend.

The celebration brought 450,000 people on to the city's streets last year.

The official Brighton Pride event has been moved online with performances from the likes of Fatboy Slim and Jess Glynne to be broadcast into revellers' living rooms, allowing them to celebrate safely.

But there are fears that large numbers could descend on Brighton seafront for an unofficial celebration.

Brighton and Hove Police warned any unofficial events could be unsafe and they would take action "if there is a serious risk to public safety, issues relating to alcohol or excessive noise".

The force said it will "consider confiscation and enforcement powers alongside our council partners" if these issues arise.

A spokesman said: "There are no official Pride events this weekend. Instead, celebrate Pride virtually.

"Do not attend unofficial events, they may be unsafe or illegal. Please respect Government guidance on social distancing."

A spokesman confirmed there were no official events taking place, adding: "Large, unplanned and unauthorised gatherings are banned during the pandemic. To prevent the spread of the virus, people are being urged to avoid mingling in groups from many different households.

“Transport services to and from the city are limited, with trains running only a quarter of their usual services due to the impact of Covid-19.

"This year’s ‘stay at home’ Pride is very different from the usual event and aims to keep the spirit of Pride thriving while keeping everyone safe inside."
