A DOG walker pulled from the sea by passersby has died, Sussex Police have confirmed.
A Coastguard helicopter was called to the beach after bystanders rushed into the water at Peacehaven beach on Tuesday evening at about 6pm.
It is believed the woman went into the sea to rescue a dog which had gone into the water.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “A woman who had been pulled from the sea off South Coast Road has sadly died.
“The woman was initially treated by paramedics at the scene and was then taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.”
The Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd was sent with Coastguard rescue teams from Newhaven and Shoreham and the RNLI lifeboat from Brighton to deal with the incident.
A spokeswoman for the Coastguard said the woman was pulled from the sea by members of the public who had gone in to help her.
