THE A27 has been closed both ways after a car overturned in a crash.

There is queuing traffic between the A27 Arundel Road eastbound from A284 (Crossbush Junction) to the A280 Angmering and Clapham junction.

An AA traffic spokesman said:  “A car has overturned about halfway along this stretch between Arundel and Worthing.”

The crash happened at about 5.15pm.

Officers from Sussex Police are diverting traffic off the A27 westbound at the junction with the A280 for Clapham and Patching.

Traffic is reported as "very heavy".

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue spokesman said crews from Worthing Fire Station are at the scene.

He added: "Please avoid the area for the time being and take an alternative route."

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police added: "Emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision involving a single vehicle on the A27 at Hammerpot Hill near Arundel at about 5.15pm.

"The road is closed in both directions and motorists are asked to avoid the area."
