A yob who threw eggs at a remembrance day parade has been condemned by a member of the Royal British Legion.

Aaron Coombs, 18, caused outrage among people in the procession when he disrupted the Alexandra Park remembrance service, where hundreds of people had gathered to honour the town's fallen servicemen and women on Sunday, November 11.

Rod Pelling, chairman of the Hastings and St Leonards branch, said members had been left shocked by the incident.

He said: "It was a disgusting thing to do. He has got no respect for the people who gave him freedom.

"We had the police cadets on parade and it hit an off-duty officer who was marching."

Coombs, of Stonefield Road, Hastings, pleaded guilty at Hastings Magistrates' Court last week, to resisting arrest and a public order offence.

He was jailed by magistrates for 21 days but because of the time he had spent on remand at Lewes Prison, he had already been released.

The court heard that just before 11am on November 11, PC Darren Buck was hit by a piece of an egg which had landed on a nearby car. He saw Coombs leaning out of the window of a flat and throwing another egg.

Coombs refused to answer the door to PC Buck who returned to the street to see Coombs shouting abuse at a police community support officer.

He soon turned his attention back to PC Buck who went back to Coombs' front door. Coombs answered and PC Buck tried to restrain him but Coombs struggled violently.

Kim Goodall, representing Coombs, said he was a young man with a short fuse and he had apologised.

Another public order offence, where Coombs was involved in a fight, was also dealt with but no separate penalty was given.

Mr Pelling said: "He may have a short fuse but never in all the time that I have been doing it have we experienced anything like this.

"We have never had any problems at all.

"Members were very annoyed about it but what else can you say?"

A spokeswoman for Hastings police said the parade had meant a lot to ex-serviceman PC Buck, as it had to others, and they were very happy with his actions to bring Coombs to justice.
