MORE leisure centres are set to reopen later this month.

Places Leisure, which operates Horsham District Council’s gyms and swimming pools, announced they plan to reopen all facilities on August 17.

This includes The Bridge Leisure Centre and The Pavilions in the Park in Horsham, Billingshurst Leisure Centre, and Steyning Leisure centre, which have all been closed since March.

Fitness fanatics have been told to pre-book sessions on the Places Leisure website or via the Places Locker phone app.

All four leisure centres have been kitted out with social distancing signage and hand sanitising stations to keep staff and customers safe.

But Horsham District Council leisure chief Councillor Jonathan Chowen said the leisure centres’ long-term future are not secured because of the “substantial”cost of social distancing measures to the council.

“There are substantial sums involved and we live in unprecedented times where we have no certainty of how long it will be before the centres can return to anything like their previous levels of activity,” he said.

“I very much hope that we can reach a point where we have long term certainty.

“But given the situation, over the coming months it will be important that we undertake regular reviews to look at both the usage and the cost to the council of providing all services including leisure facilities.”
