A MAN who was arrested after a four-hour stand-off with armed police on a housing estate was released without charge.

Officers swooped at Hobart Quay in Eastbourne and the area around Sovereign Harbour was cordoned off.

Neighbours saw armed police move in along with police negotiators with loudspeakers to talk with a man.

No homes had to be evacuated, but police talked with the man for several hours. Residents had been told to stay indoors or stay away from the sealed-off area on June 21.

The Argus:

At the time one resident said: “Tasmania Way was blocked off but the police were focusing on a house in Hobart Quay.

“There were unmarked armed police in our close plus several armed response units and an ambulance. A neighbour tried to take her dog for a walk and was told to stay indoors.”

Police at the time said: “There was nobody else at the address which was safely contained to prevent any danger to the public while officers worked to establish the circumstances and resolve the incident without any risk to anyone.

The Argus:

“Contact was made with the man by police negotiators. He came out of the address at 1.30pm and was arrested without incident. There was no violence and no injury and the address is being searched.”
