A MOTORCYCLIST has died in a crash with a pickup truck where both vehicles burst into flames.

The fatal collision happened on the A286 Birdham Road near Chichester just after 5.30pm on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old motorcyclist, from Dorchester in Dorset, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed.

The driver of the truck, a 27-year-old man from Midhurst, was not injured.

Images from the scene show a burnt-out grey Toyota Hilux at the side of the road, along with debris from the green Kawasaki motorcycle.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene and the air ambulance was called to assist.

Officers placed markers on the road as they investigated the crash and a section of the road was closed until midnight while this took place.

There has been a spate of fatal crashes on the county’s roads recently.

Three people were killed in separate collisions last week in a day of horror on Sussex roads.

A van driver died in Uckfield on Thursday and about an hour later, an elderly pedestrian was hit by a lorry near Newhaven.

The woman, in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened on the A26 New Road, near Paradise Park.

The van driver died on the A26 at the junction of Horsted Lane, Uckfield, when his vehicle crashed with an articulated lorry that had been travelling towards Lewes.

Later that evening, a man died after his car flipped over and burst into flames on the A27.

The car crashed at Hammerpot Hill, near Arundel, and the man – in his 20s – died at the scene.

His blue Vauxhall Astra was travelling eastbound when it left the road, rolled, and caught fire.

On Tuesday, The Argus revealed more than 100 people were killed or seriously injured on Brighton and Hove’s roads last year.

New Department for Transport figures show that in 2019, 168 people were killed or severely hurt in crashes in the city.

Road safety charity Brake has called on the Government to strengthen road policing, following what it described as an “appalling” number of deaths on Britain’s roads.

It said it was “high time” to take action.

Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses of the A286 crash.
