A BUSY road was blocked after a serious crash.

The collision on the A270 Lewes Road shortly before 7pm left one car on its roof and another badly damaged.

It is reported to have happened near Moulsecoomb Primary School.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

A witness said: "The traffic has been backed up for 20 minutes now, at least past the uni but I can't see further back than that.

"There's a lot of road debris and a lot of worried, curious people hanging around scratching their heads, waiting for the cars to move."

The Argus:

The road closure caused disruption to bus services in the area.

A Brighton and Hove Buses spokesman said: "Due to an accident in Lewes Road in Brighton by Bates Estate, the road is closed in both directions.

"All Lewes Road services are diverting through Moulsecoomb in both directions - in and out via Moulsecoomb Way and the bottom of The Avenue."

The Argus:

An AA spokesman warned drivers in the area to expect delays as a result of the crash.

He said: "The road is partially blocked and there is slow traffic due to a collision involving two cars involved on the A270 Lewes Road at Selsfield Drive.

"One of the cars has overturned."

The road was reported to have been cleared at 9pm.
