Can any readers tell me if Brede Place near Hastings is still standing?
This is the 14th century mansion where the famous Stephen Crane, young US author of The Red Badge Of Courage stayed during Christmas 1899.
He invited other famous writers including HG Wells, Joseph Conrad and Henry James to stay.
Sadly Crane had TB and died the following year, aged 28. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall at that Christmas to hear the brilliance of true celebrities. Any details about Brede Place would be welcomed.
