READERS have told us which roads in and around Brighton should have a speed camera.

There have been numerous occasions this year where drivers have decided to ignore speed limits.

According to an Freedom of Information request, officers in Sussex enforced 119 speeding offences to those flouting the rules in April.

In some cases, motorists in the county had been caught travelling at speeds up to three times higher than the legal limit.

So recently we asked people on Facebook which roads in Brighton and surrounding areas they would like to see a speed camera introduced in.

Below are roads that were mentioned by residents:

1. The main road in Whitehawk, Brighton

Whitehawk Way in Brighton is 20mph, but reader Nicky Goddard said people continue to speed.

She said: “I live here and there are cars day and night speeding so fast up and down.

“I think every road in Brighton should have cameras added.”

2. Church Road, Portslade

Chrissy Saunders said she would like to see a camera introduced from the junction at Old Shoreham Road down to the seafront.

She said: “The speed people go down there despite it passing a school (St Mary's) and being near a nursery and another school (St Peters) is shocking.”

3. Benfield Way, Portslade

Sally Atkinson said this road is used as a "mad dash cut through to Old Shoreham Road".

4. Preston Drove

Moon Sandy said people treat it like a racetrack.

5. Park Lane, Southwick

Carolyn Ann said: “Boy racers love this road it seems.”

6. Old London Road, Patcham

Carl Simpson said he would like to see speed bumps introduced here.

Other roads that were mentioned by readers include:

7. Coleman Avenue, off Portland Road

8. Trafalgar Road, Portslade

9. Old Shoreham Road, Southwick

10. Fox way, Portslade

11. Lewes Road by Melbourne street

According to the council’s Speed Management Strategy, “stringent criteria” based on collected data from police is used to see where speed cameras are put.

It adds: “Other cost effective measures must be considered as part of the selection process before safety cameras are chosen as a potential option.”
