ENVIRONMENTAL protesters will attempt to set an obscure world record involving chicken masks.

Campaign group Divest East Sussex will hold a virtual protest via online service Zoom on Saturday urging East Sussex County Council to pull pension fund money out of fossil firm companies.

But all protesters will wear chicken masks in a bid to set a world record for “most people to attend a Zoom protest wearing a chicken mask”.

The animal was chosen as the chairman of the county council’s pensions committee is Councillor Gerard Fox.

Protester Fran Witt urged the Conservative councillor “not to let East Sussex County Council’s fossil fuel chickens come home to roost”.

“With the window of opportunity to prevent catastrophic climate change rapidly shrinking there’s never been a more important time for the county council to ditch its investments in fossil fuels before they come home to roost,” she said.

“Having already declared a climate emergency the county council now needs to put its words into action and stop funding the companies that are driving the climate crisis.

“Failure to limit global warming to 1.5C will lead to calamitous impacts for some of the world’s poorest people.

“But keeping global warming to 1.5C will require dramatic cuts in carbon emissions.”
