VETOED plans to create a cycle lane on a busy road could be revived, a council said.

Work will begin from next Monday on a temporary 1.8-mile bike lane along Upper Shoreham Road from the Holmbush roundabout to the River Adur.

West Sussex County Council originally proposed a longer cycle lane to link the River Adur to the existing Old Shoreham Road cycleway created by Brighton and Hove City Council.

But last week Adur District Council leader Councillor Neil Parkin vetoed plans to build the bike lane east of the Holmbush roundabout.

Yet a county council spokesman said it may revive the scheme if the Government grants more cycle lane funds to the council.

“Following further consultations with stakeholders the potential is there to create a route along the A270 to Brighton city centre,” he said.

“Brighton and Hove City Council is considering a scheme that could link to ours, on the A270, as part of its Tranche Two bid to the Department for Transport’s Emergency Active Travel Fund.”
