SUMMER seemingly came to an abrupt end in Sussex when Storm Francis arrived.

High winds and ferocious seas battered the coastline on Tuesday as gusts reached 59mph in Shoreham, though Sussex escaped an amber wind warning in force in Wales and central England.

These fantastic action shots from the Argus Camera Club show just how powerful the storm was.

From Brighton Marina to Shoreham Port, harbour arms were pounded with waves.

Shoreham Port officers were already removing seaweed from a lock gate in the aftermath of Storm Ellen when the high winds struck.

For some, Storm Francis caused havoc on the roads.

Part of Blatchington Road in Hove was cordoned off by firefighters in the evening after tiles fell from the roof of a building.

Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Ramsdale said the high winds were unusual for August.

“Wind speeds this strong are unusual during August and may come as a surprise to people spending time outdoors trying to catch the last few days of summer.
