Two separate pieces of research on World War One have led me to Brighton.
Firstly, the great hero, Captain George Burdon McKean VC MC MM was buried in Brighton, as he met his wife there.
Secondly, Drummer (later Sergeant) E Thomas MM, who was officially credited with firing the first rifle shot of World War One, on August 22, 1914, when serving with the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards. After 24 years of service he and his family settled in Brighton where he was a theatre commissionaire, complete with mandatory waxed moustache.
If anyone could add to my knowledge of these two splendid soldiers, it would be much appreciated if they would write to me.
