THE Conservative transport spokesman has hit out at Labour councillors rebelling over cycle lanes.

Last week The Argus reported on Labour representatives who took aim at the A259 Brighton seafront lane, which was proposed by their own party, in defence of the city’s taxi trade.

But Tory Councillor Lee Wares, right, has written to the group accusing them of “faux concern”.

Cllr Wares said the group – Labour councillors Jackie O’Quinn, Chris Henry, Peter Atkinson, Carmen Appich and Les Hamilton – voted for the lanes and against compromise solutions.

He wrote: “It was refreshing and encouraging to see you speak out against the cycle lanes being installed across the city.

“The cycle lanes that you talk about as not having any common sense, not being consulted on, having no compromise, being ideologically driven, being poorly planned and being totally unnecessary, were proposed by you, the Labour Party.

“You voted unanimously for them with the support of the Green group. Only the Conservatives voted against.

“Many will see through your faux concern. After you have put in the cycle lanes, supported the plans, voted against the opportunity to change and now have seen the backlash of the city, you want to put distance between yourselves and your own deeds.

“I am sure many will give you the credit you crave if you admitted you were part of the administration that proposed what is happening but now accept Labour made grave errors. Will you now join the Conservative group in calling on the rest of your colleagues in the Labour Party to bring an end to this chaos?”
