With their Mercury Music Prize-nominated album, their own highly-rated record label and ten years of collective history, walking away from The Delgados was always going to be hard for singer-songwriter Emma Pollock.

The sweet-voiced singer was integral to The Delgados' sound, and in some of her solo songs, in particular Acid Test and The Optimist, echoes of her previous band were very much in evidence.

What makes Emma's solo work so compelling is her stripping away of the syrupy strings which occasionally blighted the Delgados work, replacing them with a simple guitar, piano, bass and drums formula.

Still present was the power of her songwriting and her impassioned delivery, despite her diminutive form. It felt quite strange to be sitting listening to her in a small club with a handful of people rather than standing shoulder-toshoulder in a large sweaty crowd.

Hopefully UK indie music fans will soon pick up on her again.
