WINDMILLS will kick-start a park’s revival, council chiefs hope.

Brooklands Park in Lancing struggled with poisonous blue-green algae in its lake in recent years.

But after dredging and removing silt, Worthing Borough Council now plans to install two windmills to keep oxygen flowing in the lake and give the park a new lease of life.

Work on the windmills will begin next Monday as part of a £3 million masterplan to revive the park as a tourist destination.

Council environment chief Councillor Edward Crouch said the windmills will promote sustainable energy as they do not require electricity.

“These windmills offer visitors the opportunity for interpretation around wind-generated power and sustainable energy solutions, in the light of the climate crisis,” he said.

“[They also] offer a functional and beneficial impact on the lake environment and for local wildlife.”

The £3 million masterplan recently received a £100,000 boost from Rampion Windfarm and the Sussex Community Foundation. The grant will contribute towards building a sustainable cafe by the lake.

Council chiefs hope construction on the park will begin later this year.

The plans include creating an adventure play area, “contemplative garden” and clearings for food growing and bird boxes.

The council also hopes to build a mount at the park’s highest point, as well as 2.5km fitness trail.
