A rapist, a drug-driving thug and a terrifying robber were among those put behind bars last month.

Peraslingam Nanthvavaraman, 40, was jailed for eight years for rape in Portslade.

He had plied a young woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, with alcohol, then attacked her.

The incident happened at the Wimpy restaurant in Station Road, and the young woman’s partner arrived to find her unconscious and partially naked before an ambulance arrived.

Nanthvavaraman was said to be a “danger” to women and showed a “sense of entitlement” about sex, the court heard.

Meanwhile Mathew Gardiner, 35, had gone on an all day bender in Hastings before getting behind the wheel the next day.

The drug driver had not gone to sleep and was seven times the cocaine limit when he hit 53-year-old cyclist Antoney Colley on the Coombe Valley Road in Bexhill at 100mph.

Mr Colley was killed instantly. Gardiner also admitted a “sickening” attack on his friend Jonathan Rainbow in Hastings. He was jailed for a total of ten and a half years.

Police were called to Westbourne village Post Office and Co-op in May after a masked robber brandishing a knife threatened staff and stole cash.

It was described as a “terrifying ordeal” for staff.

But the robber dropped a hat which contained his DNA and was traced. Sam Hewett, 31, admitted robbery and was jailed for five years.

Pervert Neil Turner was sent back to prison for indecently assaulting boys in Worthing and Shoreham.

The offences occurred while he was a music teacher at Shoreham College and a choirmaster in Worthing.

The 67-year-old was sent back to prison for another two years and four months after new victims came forward following his first conviction in 2017.

When neighbours entered the flat to intervene he threw a knife at one and bit the other. Shaw was jailed for 20 month.

Michael Hargreaves, 38, also found himself in court over domestic violence. Police were called to a flat in Elmore Road, Brighton, and there two women officers were threatened with by the bare-chested thug brandishing a knife. Hargreaves was high on the “chemsex” drug GHB which has become popular among some in the gay community.

He barricaded himself into a kitchen but was coaxed out by brave PCs. Hargreaves was jailed for 23 months after admitting affray.

Finally Sadri Gjana admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving on the A23. The 19-year-old sped at 100mph then mistook a layby for a slip road, crashing into a lorry. His friend suffered devastating, life-changing injuries. Gjana was jailed for two years and three months.
