A NAIL bar and flat was raided by police over fears about people being forced to work there.

Officers went to a property in Uckfield High Street over concerns of “modern slavery”.

Documents and cashed were seized at a flat as police executed a warrant to search the site.

Detective Sergeant Jo Cooper said the crime of forced labour can often be hidden, and can affect some of the most vulnerable people in society.

The detective said: “This action is part of our ongoing commitment to uncover the problem of modern slavery that can affect any part of the country. We are working with our partners in Discovery to expose hidden crime and safeguard some of the most vulnerable people within our communities.”

It involved working alongside councils, government departments including the Home Office and HM Revenue and Customs, and charity groups.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of requiring the carrying out of forced labour, contrary to the Modern Slavery Act 2015. She was released on police bail until September 23 while the enquiry continues.
