Toilet attendants and cleaners in Brighton and Hove are celebrating being crowned the best in England.

The city clinched second place in the UK league of local authority toilets, pipped by the Scottish Highlands.

The top mark of five stars went to the public toilets on the city's Western Esplanade, which are cleaned by Pearl Short.

Seventeen other toilet blocks gained four stars.

Brighton and Hove City Council environment spokesman Geoffrey Theobald said: "This is fantastic news, not just for the council, but for all our residents, people who work here and those who visit our city.

"To be recognised as the best in England, and to be placed second in the UK league table, is a remarkable achievement, especially as councils with much bigger budgets and fewer facilities were placed well below Brighton and Hove.

"But all credit must go to the dedicated team of staff from Wetton Cleaning Services who work so hard to achieve these high standards, which are continuing to rise year after year."
