MOTORISTS are being urged to avoid the site of a serious crash where a van was "sliced in half".

Police closed the A272 near Cowfold this morning following the collision between a lorry and a van.

The road remains shut as emergency teams work at the scene.

They have also been joined by the air ambulance.

The Argus:

A witness said the van had been "sliced in half" with the lorry having toppled on to its side in the crash.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police responded to a collision involving a lorry and a van on the A272 near Cowfold at 8.55am today.

"The van driver has been taken to hospital by air ambulance with serious injuries.

"Road closures are in place and significant disruption can be expected this morning.

The Argus:

"Please avoid the area if you can.

"Anyone who witnessed what happened can report online or call 101, quoting 299 of 22/09."

West Sussex Fire and Rescue and ambulance crews are also at the scene.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision on the A272 between Cowfold and the Buckbarn Crossroads.

The Argus:

"We have two crews, our technical rescue unit and heavy rescue tender, at the site.

"The South East Coast Ambulance Service, Sussex Police and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service are also attending.

"The road will be closed for some time."
