A MAN who had a 13-hour stand-off with police after climbing onto a town centre roof has been arrested and charged.

Police were called at 11am on Friday to a man who had climbed up some scaffolding onto the roof of The Chippery in Corporation Street, Blackburn.

A crowd gathered as the man threw slates onto the floor, causing police to cordon off several roads including Mincing Lane, King Street, Barton Street and Corporation Street.

As the weather worsened on Friday evening, the man asked to be taken down from the roof by the fire service.

A police spokesman said: “At around 11.15pm, we received information that he wanted to come down off the roof.

“So we had to get Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to get their cherry-picker to go up and get him down safely.

“It was about 12.15am when he was successfully brought down to the ground and he was arrested.”

Dane Saez, 32, of no fixed address, was charged with affray, causing a public nuisance, two assaults on emergency workers, four charges of causing criminal damage and common assault. He will appear before Blackburn Magistrates Court on Monday.
