COUNCILLORS have decided to keep the controversial cycle lane on Old Shoreham Road following a committee meeting last night.

In May, residents woke up to the new cycle route taking up two lanes of the A270 Old Shoreham Road, one of the main arteries into and out of Hove to the west of the city.

The decision comes after a public survey by Brighton and Hove City Council found 64 per cent of people do not support the cycle lane installed in May.

Campaigners have battled over the future of the lane with some wanting it made permanent and others wanting it scrapped.

Both the Old Shoreham Road and Medeira Drive cycle lanes were funded using £663,000 in government cash.
