A SPORTS retailer is set to complete its move into a more prominent spot in the city centre.

JD Sports is moving into a new 8,200 sq ft store in Churchill Square in Brighton.

The sport retailer is moving from its current store which is next to WH Smith on the corner of the north west entrance to the front of the shopping centre.

Previously the store site was occupied by flagship retailer BHS until the company fell into financial trouble in 2016.

It was then occupied by Burton and Dorothy Perkins.

The fashion retailers also closed their doors in October last year, leaving the prominent shopfront vacant.

In the past few weeks workers have been converting the space into the new sportswear store, with signs put in place last month telling customers the new shop would open in October.

Churchill Square centre director Mark Buchanan-Smith is hopeful that JD Sports will continue to offer excitement to shoppers and that the retailer will enjoy better fortunes than the former occupants.

The new store is set to open on Saturday, he said.

He told The Argus: “I can confirm that the all-new JD Sports flagship store will open on Saturday.

“The 8,200 sq ft store looks fantastic, modern and bright and we are confident that our customers will enjoy the new shopping experience.”

Mr Buchanan-Smith would not be drawn on what may replace the JD Sports store at the north west entrance.
