A PENSIONER was arrested on suspicion of driving while on drugs after a 10-year-old cyclist suffered serious injuries in a crash.

The boy was riding along Church Street in West Chiltington at about 10.20pm when he was hit by a Renault Twingo, suffering serious arm, shoulder, leg and hip injuries.

Police attended the scene and arrested a 76-year-old man nearby on suspicion of drink-driving, as well as driving while unfit through drugs, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Ambulance crews were called to the site of the crash and the boy was taken to hospital, where he remains this morning.

The pensioner, who was uninjured in the crash, is currently in police custody.

Sussex Police are now investigating the incident, and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward as they look to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

A force spokesman said: “Anyone who saw the collision or the vehicles involved prior to the collision – particularly anyone with dash cam or CCTV – is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Mainland.”
