HUNDREDS of Amazon parcels have been scattered across the A27 after a lorry overturned on the busy road.

The vehicle flipped on to its side spilling cardboard boxes with the Amazon logo across the road.

It is unclear how this will affect deliveries in the area. Amazon has been contacted for comment.

The lorry came to rest on its side, lying across the central reservation and blocking both carriageways near Chichester.

The Argus:

The incident happened at 5.40am and police are warning that the A27 is likely to be closed "for most of the day" while work takes place to clear the road.

Following the crash, the lorry driver was taken to hospital with a serious injury, though police say it is "not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing".

A 50-year-old woman who was driving a car which was also involved in the collision suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened on the A27 near Chichester between Fishbourne and Warblington, a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said.

The Argus:

This is causing delays of up to three hours travelling between Chichester and Emsworth.

The spokesman said: "Crews have released one person from the HGV using small tools.

"The driver of the other vehicle self-released prior to fire crews' attendance.

The Argus:

"Crews also worked to contain a diesel leak using environmental packs.

"Both carriageways remain closed between Fishbourne and Warblington and are expected to remain closed for a considerable time.

"Please avoid the area. Traffic is very busy on the parallel A259 in both directions."

The Argus:

Sergeant Richard Hobb of the Sussex Roads Policing unit, who attended the scene, reinforced this warning to drivers.

He said: "The road will be closed both eastbound and westbound for some time due to the protracted recovery of the overturned HGV."

The Argus:

Hampshire Roads Policing unit also attended the scene and said it was possible the road will remain closed for "most of the day".

There are heavy delays in the area as a result, with nearby roads also seeing a huge increase in traffic as drivers attempt to divert around the closed stretch of the A27.
