To celebrate National Curry Week, we asked our readers for their favourite spice merchants in Sussex... and you did not disappoint.

Almost 100 of you responded, suggesting an array of fantastic takeaways and restaurants which we cannot wait to try.

These are the curry crafters whose names continually cropped up...

FLICKING through the responses to our call-out for curry house suggestions, the same ten names were mentioned more than once as loyal customers gave them their seal of approval.

So, stomachs rumbling and taste buds tantalised, we gathered the Sussex sites that you were shouting about from the roof tops and listed them in an attempt to compile a guide to the county’s finest curry houses.

1. Mahaan Restaurant in Montague Street, Worthing

Mahaan Restaurant received the most mentions in our hunt for curry royalty.

Specialising in authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, the award-winning venue’s website makes the bold statement that it is “the finest restaurant in Worthing”.

A total of 271 five-star ratings on TripAdvisor go some way to solidifying this claim, with Argus reader Simon Parker agreeing wholeheartedly.

“The Mahaan in Worthing is one of the best around,” he said.

2. Red Chillies in Preston Drove, Brighton

Tucked away at the top of Preston Park, this takeaway is a real crowd-pleaser.

Tanya Ransom said the site was “defo the best” while Rachel Rankin-Hayward singled out its penchant for paneer dishes for particular praise.

TripAdvisor reviewers repeatedly mention the friendly staff, describing the food on offer as “hot and delicious”.

3. Eshna’s Nutrition in Coronation Buildings, Brougham Road, Worthing

“Eshna’s is the best by far,” customer Christine Mayzes professed – and plenty of people agreed.

A gallery on the restaurant and takeaway’s website features an array of richly coloured dishes which would have any curry-lover reaching for their phone to place an order.

A potential contender for Mahaan’s Worthing title, Sarah Young said the site was “the best curry house in Worthing”.

4. Planet India in Richmond Parade, Brighton

This Brighton venue is the first vegetarian restaurant on our list, relying on plant power to create flavours that pack a punch.

The family-run business offers visitors plenty of variety, with a menu that includes curry flavourings such as pea and paneer, sweetcorn and patra, and Mombai potato.

It also has a second restaurant in Third Avenue, Hove, for the city’s westerly residents who do not fancy a lengthy walk before their dinner.

5. Hove Tandoori in Church Road, Hove

There is plenty of heritage on offer at Hove Tandoori, with much of its menu made using family recipes which have been passed down from generation to generation.

As a result, it gives visitors the chance to sample truly authentic Indian cuisine.

Of 285 five-star TripAdvisor reviews, perhaps the most flattering was one customer who proclaimed the restaurant and takeaway was “perfect”.

“It was the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten,” she gushed.

6. Kismet Tandoori in Portland Road, Hove

The family-run takeaway has been going for quite some time and, as a result, its quality cuisine is well established.

Founded in 1984, a highly skilled chef and the finest ingredients combine to create delightful meals for hungry customers.

The menu features a wide choice of Indian and Bangladeshi food cooked using traditional method such as the tandoor, a vertical clay oven.

7. Spice Bros in Preston Road, Brighton

This curry house claims fresh ingredients are the secret to its mouth-watering dishes.

“Give us a try if you have not already, you will not be disappointed,” the website promises.

And it appears the site delivers on this pledge.

Customer John Barnes commented: “I would happily put it against any other (restaurant) and be confident it would win... by a mile.”

8. Chilli Pickle in Jubilee Street, Brighton

This restaurant does not just offer customers a selection of delicious dishes, it can also transport them more than 4,650 miles in just a couple of mouthfuls..

The meals on offer are inspired by the chef’s travel around the different regions India, taking visitors on a culinary tour of the nation.

Since opening in 2010, it has established itself as the first thought in many of Brighton’s peckish punters’ minds.

9. Elizabethan Cottage Tandoori in Old London Road, Patcham, Brighton

The historic Patcham building that Elizabethan Cottage Tandoori calls home is backed up by plenty of experience in the kitchen.

The restaurant and takeaway has been serving delicious Indian and Bangladeshi dinners since 1987.

10. Curry Leaf in Portland Road, Hove

Our final stop on this whistle-stop tour of Sussex’s finest curry houses takes us back to Hove.

More specifically, to Curry Leaf in Old London Road.

One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “This is our staple Indian takeaway and never fails to disappoint”.
